Hair fibers for dark brown hair: matching the root, not the ends
By Carlos Gandra, founder of most. Published September 13, 2026. Updated September 13, 2026. What most. has and has not tested.
most. Dark Brown is the shade for most dark brown hair, matched to the root in the thinning area, in daylight, not to the ends. Hair that reads black indoors takes Black. Medium brown that lifts noticeably lighter in the sun takes Light Brown. Between two shades, go darker. A wrong first shade swaps free, with no return.
Which most. shade matches dark brown hair?
most. Dark Brown matches dark brown hair, and it is the most common match across the four most. shades: Black, Dark Brown, Light Brown and Blonde. It covers dark brown, chestnut and most medium brown hair. Choose Black instead if your hair reads black indoors. Choose Light Brown if your medium brown lifts noticeably lighter in the sun.
Each border has a test. For Black, hold your hair beside something truly black in daylight; hair that turns brown beside it is Dark Brown. For Light Brown, hold the hair up with a window behind it; hair that lifts, showing a lighter core, is Light Brown. Both are in the most. hair fiber shade guide.
Why do you match hair fibers to the root and not the ends?
Hair fibers are matched to the root because that is where they land. most. fibers cling to the first inch of hair out of the scalp by static, and that inch is what they have to blend into. Sun-lightened ends, grown-out color and balayage sit away from the scalp and are not the reference point.
Dark brown hair is usually lighter at the ends than at the root. Someone who calls their hair medium brown often has dark brown roots. Look at the root in the area you plan to fill, since a crown and a hairline can differ.
What does most. Dark Brown look like on chestnut, medium brown and black-brown hair?
most. Dark Brown reads as depth at the scalp rather than as a color. On chestnut hair it fills the gaps and the warmth of the hair carries over it. On medium brown it reads slightly deeper than the strands, which is what closes a thinning area. On black-brown hair it can read too light in daylight.
most. has run no color measurement on its four shades; the table is what Dark Brown does in use.
| What you see at the root | most. shade | Why | If it looks wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reads black indoors | Black | Dark Brown can sit on near-black hair as lighter specks. | Use less first. If Black still reads as a solid block, swap to Dark Brown. |
| Dark brown in daylight | Dark Brown | The most common match; it reads as shadow and disappears. | Too dark: use less, then swap to Light Brown. Visible as separate specks: swap to Black. |
| Warm chestnut | Dark Brown | most. makes no red or auburn fiber, so match depth and ignore tone. | Flat or heavy against the warmth: use less, then swap to Light Brown. |
| Medium brown that lifts in the sun | Light Brown | The lighter core shows outdoors, where Dark Brown reads as a patch. | Pale on the pigmented hair: swap to Dark Brown. |
| Dark brown with about half grey | Light Brown | One step lighter than the band. The fiber fills gaps; it does not recolor grey. | Too dark against the grey: swap to Blonde. Too pale to register: swap to Dark Brown. |
Loose powder in the bottle reads darker than the same powder spread across hair, so do not judge a shade by the bottle. The pigments in each shade are listed by CI number on the published ingredient list.
Should you go darker or lighter when you are between two shades?
most. shades should be matched darker, not lighter, when you are between two of them, unless your hair lifts noticeably lighter in the sun. Too light, the fiber sits on darker hair as visible specks. Too dark, it reads as a shadow at the scalp, and only under strong overhead light.
A thinning area already looks lighter than the rest of the head, because scalp shows through. Depth closes that gap, which is why Dark Brown over medium brown hair usually works and Light Brown over dark brown hair usually does not. Hair that lifts in the sun is the exception.
Does dark brown hair with grey change the shade?
Dark brown hair with grey changes the most. shade once the grey reaches about half. A scattering of grey changes nothing: stay on Dark Brown. About half grey, go one step lighter, to Light Brown. Mostly grey, one step lighter than the band, still Light Brown. Fully grey or white, buy a brand that makes that shade.
Grey strands return light where pigmented strands absorb it, so a Dark Brown fiber beside grey reads heavy. The fiber fills the space between strands so less scalp shows, and the lighter shade does that with less contrast. most. makes no grey or white shade; the hair fibers for grey hair guide covers fully grey hair.
How do you check a dark brown match in daylight before a full application?
A dark brown match is checked with a small test patch, in daylight, before you cover the whole area. Apply a light pass of most. Dark Brown to one spot at the edge of the thinning area, on dry hair, then look at it near a window and in a front-camera photo with the flash off.
- Start with dry hair and a dry scalp, any leave-in or minoxidil fully dried.
- Shake one light pass over a spot about an inch across, in short taps, close to the head.
- Pat the hair to settle the fibers. Do not rub.
- Step to a window. Bathroom light throws shadow across the part and hides differences.
- Take a front-camera photo, flash off, the harshest test.
If the patch disappears, do the whole area. If it reads as a dark patch, use less before you blame the shade. Specks lighter than the hair mean the shade is too light. The full routine, including setting with your preferred hairspray, is in the how to apply hair fibers guide.
What if the first shade is wrong?
A wrong first most. shade swaps free, with no return needed. Email hello@mosthairfibers.com with the shade you have and the shade you want, and the correct bottle ships out. The first order also carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, once per customer and household, with used or empty bottles refunded in full.
Before you swap, try less. The sparser the area, the more of each pass lands on scalp rather than hair, so the same shade reads heavier there. The table above says which way to swap. For the guarantee, email within 30 days of delivery; most. sends a prepaid return label and refunds once the carrier scans the return. Both policies are on the most. facts page.
Dark Brown is where most dark brown hair lands. All four shades are $39.95 for a 25 g bottle, about 30 days of daily use, on the most. hair fibers product page. If the first shade misses, the swap is free, and the first order is covered for 30 days.
